Dylan Thomas' Birthplace & Family Home, Swansea, Wales

Post by Dylan Thomas Home »

Hi All,

new to the forum but thought you may be interested in this very unique literary house which is ideal for living the life of an Edwardian family.

The birthplace and family home of the great Welsh poet and broadcaster Dylan Thomas, 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in the heart of the Swansea Uplands, which had been student accommodation from the late 80’s into the early 2000s and near dereliction, has been privately restored (without financial aid through local authority or Welsh government or lottery grants) to its fine Edwardian 1914 beginnings with all the fixtures and furnishings reflecting the time period.

The house was where Dylan was born on 27th October 1914 and lived with his family for the first 23 years of his life. It was within the 4 walls of his tiny bedroom by the boiler at the rear of the house that he astonishingly wrote a near two-thirds of his published works! This bedroom has now been painstakingly recreated to a time resembling 1935.

The house is very unique in that as well as it being open daily for visitors to explore, it is also available for bed & breakfast and self-catering stays. It is one of only a handful of literary houses worldwide where visitors can stay overnight. Guests can truly step back in time and live the life before television and Wi-Fi! - It is also available for Edwardian dining experiences such as elegant evening meals, luxurious lunches and traditional Welsh afternoon teas…Perfect to gossip over!

The house is the setting of one of his best loved works 'A Child's Christmas in Wales.'
