River Tees Viking Helmet?

Post by RyanA »

I've been seeing a couple of posts here there and everywhere (albeit from a few years back) about this supposed Viking helmet found in the River Tees, supposedly post-1000AD with a face plate. Apart from 'RIVER TEES - VIKING HELMET?!?!?' I can't find anything else about it. Do you guys know anything?

The world has gone extremely quiet about this 'find' - to the extend that most references and images of it appear to have been removed from tinterweb. Tends to make me suspicious..........

It wasn't found in the Tees. It was found at Chapel Yard in Yarm whilst a sewerage system was being laid in the 1950s.
It is (or at least was last year) on display at Preston Park Museum.

I've got plenty of pics, the Tees Archaeology Sites And Monuments Record from 2007 and a newspaper article about it from 1974.

I would also be interested in seeing any pictures if possible.

Has anyone made a repro of this helmet? I could be interested in a child size one for Viking school visits, as it's a regional find.
I understand it's currently undergoing conservation work, so not on display.

As far as I know, no.
Of course, the jury is still very much out as to whether it's genuine or not.
It's currently being 'evaluated'. I've told them what to look for and told then that there's enough interest to crowdfund a proper analysis of it.

We'll see.
