13th century kit

Postby Foxe » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:25 pm

Can anybody direct me to some kit resources for first half of the 13th century (circa 1220-1250ish). I'm looking for clothing, arms and armour, and 'general' kit.

This is for a possible project which might be a one-off, but might blossom and be repeated, so I'm really looking for good, but also basic. Certainly no higher than yeoman, and more likely a wretched peasant levy.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Slightly later than your specific date, but more or less correct, I imagine the poorer person wouldn't have changed drastically. Big mix of stuff

Andy Goddard's pages from a long time ago still have the basic information in a readily accessible format - see http://www.bumply.com/Medieval/clothing01.html

The C13th is a time of change, so what is OK in 1200 is not OK in 1250. Andy's stuff is a little later again, so for example the coat of plates is probably not around in 1200-1250, and the aillettes certainly aren't.

The Mac bible already referenced is from the end of your specified period, and the usual caveats apply - it is French not English, shows biblical scenes rather than contemporary events, and there's no guarantee that the illustrator had any detailed knowledge of arms and armour (though you'll see from the siege and battle scenes that he seems to have had a pretty good knowledge).

Can I point you to our Wiki (which is still very much a work in progress)

Kit Guides and interpretive Re-creation is where to find most of the info to help new members get started. it's not exhaustive, but may give you some ideas if nothing else. Geared towards 1250.

Hi Foxe,

I can't really point you to any specific references (though there are quite a few around, but they tend to be a bit scattered), but I might be able to help you with information. The group that I belong to (Knights In Battle) do a 13th C performance (dated around 1205-1215 ish), and while we're a bit lax on authenticity for it (it's historic entertainment, not living history), I've built up quite a bit of knowledge as I aim for a high authenticity standard. However, I'll work better to specific questions, rather than general stuff, as you know.

Best wishes
