supporting hoes
has any one got any ideas of how to support hoes (stocking) other than a garter belt? for the mid to end of the 16th century.

Hi Andy,
Leg ties just below the knee work fine.
We have thought about using clothing hooks sewen to the inside of the britches and then hooked into the hoes as you put your britches on. We havn't tried it but you don't see many clothing hooks in paintings but loads of them are found so they must have been used for something.
We do know one gentleman who like to look dashing and I understand he uses a suspender belt. But I'm fairly confident these are not authentic.

Re: supporting hoes
For over the knee hose/stockings, try garters tied below or just above the knee, different people find different arrangements comfortable. For 'all the way up' stockings to wear with very short trunkhose, we've been experimenting with pointing the knitted stockings either to the garment or to another supporting item

Re: supporting hoes
There's evidence for that in the Gunnister find. He seems to have pointed his hose to his coat. (I don't know how well that would work, or why he didn't point them to his breeches).sally wrote:For over the knee hose/stockings, try garters tied below or just above the knee, different people find different arrangements comfortable. Re: supporting hoes
btw Gunnister is a bit later than your period, but I originally posted because I thought it was useful to know that people did point knitted hose to their other clothes.
