Z's and gravestones???

Post by Grania »

Hi folks. This question is on behalf of a colleague at a museum where I work.

The museum covers a number of periods, and has a Victorian kitchen. In one of the cupboards are a set of little cups with the alphabet on, and pictures to symbolise/illustrate the letters - for example the letter 'T' has pictures of tents on one side and towers on the other.
The mystery is the 'Z' cup - on one side of the letter are zebras, and on the other something that looks very much like gravestones.... :wtf: Has anyone got any idea what this means or symbolises, because it's stumped me, my colleague and the curator! They were asked by the visitor to the museum and apparently the only answer they could think of was zombies...but somehow didn't think they were right!!!!

Thanks
G

The Z picture only refers to one, not two, item with the query "what is the name of the animal in the picture".
Zebras come from Africa which was always referred to as the white mans grave at the time. Given the Victorian fascination with death probably the grave stones are a reference to that.

I think (as miss Costello said) that it simply refers to the caption "Z comes last and here it all ends". Nothing complex, simply a reminder of the end of the alphabet in a way that will be remembered. Oh, and a bit of a rationalist statement, subliminally suggesting that tehre is no life after death :)

Noun 1. Z - the ending of a series or sequence; "the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end"--Revelation
omega
conclusion, ending, finish - event whose occurrence ends something; "his death marked the ending of an era"; "when these final episodes are broadcast it will be the finish of the show"

V-rod and Z-rod Symbols

These symbols, as their name suggest, are named after the shapes. In the V-rod symbol, an arrow-shape over that of crescent can be seen. This symbol is used to represent the phenomenon of death. The Z-rod symbol has a shape of the letter 'Z'; the symbol includes features like serpent, double-disk, doorway, sun, tomb, etc. Various concepts/phenomenons like solar cycle, death, afterlife, etc. are depicted through these symbols. The Scottish Celtic symbols and their meanings should help in understanding more about symbols from the Celtic tradition.

The capital (majuscule) letter Z represents hell or the afterlife in hell following death and the final judgment.

But as the caption says: "Z comes last and here it all ends". Probably nothing more nothing less. A tempest in a teacup marked 'Z'.
