Late medieval cook book (maybe)
I'm looking for pictures or descriptions of late medieval cooking pots/pans. Does any one know of any books with them in? I don't want some thing that is likely to poison me (I have enough inner probelms as it is).
Did they use some sort of frying pan, when were cast iron cauldrons introduced?
Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Late medieval cook book (maybe)
widespread cast iron is late 16th century. Wrought iron pans do exist as do cast bronze. What kind of time frame are you talking about so I can check my books for greater details

Have a look at http://kerberos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/realonline/ It's one of my main places for pictorial research, it has an english search function as well. Once you get used to have several different keywords for a search, you'll get some great ollustrations/paintings!
Just some examples (all from 1440 -1500): http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 000045.JPG Detail from the "Birth of Mary"; Master of the Schotten-altar, documented ca. 1469;
http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 001070.JPG Detail from the "Adoration of the Magi", same painter, documented ca. 1469
http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 003733.JPG Detail from "Birth of Christ", Gerlamoos, Austria, 1460-1470
http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 012491.JPG Detail from this one: http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 012482.JPG "Adorastion of the Magi", Levoca, Slovenia, 1470 - 1480
For the material: I have been told of some surviving example of iron-cast cooking-pots (missing the english word for "Grape", sorry) in Berne or Zurich (IIRC), but no cast pans AFAIK.

Thanks that long pan looks cast I don't see how else it could be made. There must be some where in the UK with some originals. I wonder is any of the castles have a kitchen with all the bits and pieces in.

Some one should give Karen a big prize.
I think going by the pictures if I use a small cauldron or a skillet type pan, maybe blacksmith made rather than cast I would be OK. Its only for me to cook my own food.

Because there would have to be three of them.

Re: Late medieval cook book (maybe)
Thanks for the help. I got a nice steel pan at the week end. Almost the same as the one in one of the pictures.

Try this book, it's fab. Iron and Brass Implements of the English House
by J. Seymour Lindsay (Author) . Might be a bit late for you but gives lots of earlier references also.
