Royal Horse Artillery

Post by craig1459 »

I'm out of my era here...I feel quite dizzy... :?

My grandad claims that his father was in the Royal Horse Artillery and rode horses in both the Boer War and WW1.

Now I can imagine this in the Boer War, but given my lack of in-depth knowledge of the Great War, I'm a bit sceptical.

Can anyone confirm/deny this scenario and if possible advise of the best sources to verify the actual presence of my great-grandfather in the RHA and activities therein?

Any help greatly appreciated. :)

Craig,
The Royal Horse Artillery of the Great War used a team of six horses, with a rider per pair, to pull a limber and a 13 pdr field gun. Other members of the gun crew were also mounted.
The RHA today ceremonially fire these guns (not cannon) on the occassion of the Monarch's birthday and other salutes.
Hope this helps Ian.

try the rha records, as he joined before 1901 to be in the boer war it could be interesting finding the records, try a quick search on the national archive , use the name of your relative and start from there, if you find him then you can sometimes find service record information for people, depending on the documents survival, also try the old census for where you know he was in 1891 0r 1901, 1901 depends on whether he was overseas or in a home garrison though. but the rha went into action with horses in ww1.
