actually quite a bit before that, but it's a common mistake that the end of the century is when the transition occurs.Also remember that the style of the surcoat changes hugely from 11oo to 1400 and by 1400 it has been replaced by something else.

I know that it happens (at least once) somewhere in the 14th C, but that's between my periods, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. I just know it's gone by 1400.
2d, Nigel, I didn't intend to imply that you wouldn't give good advice, I hope it didn't sound like I was. I just know from experience that for something like that you get there and THEN think that you should have brought your gambeson!
