a early saxon wargames question

iam wanting to do a early saxon army to fight my romano british, and i was wandering. what did the early saxons look like ive had a look though some books but cant find what iam after so i thought id ask them that know these things what are the diffences between viking age saxons and earlyer saxons if any that is ?

Shorter tunics, smaller shields, less metalwork in general (i.e. mail, helms swords etc.) large numbers of people carrying these strange knives that they call a seax - hence the name seaxons.

small shields and unarmoured for the best part, though the leader and his hearthguard are going to be in very nice armour, heavily decorated helms and swords and a tonne of shiney metal plastered over them. You might even see a few bits of late roman stuff kicking around in the ranks since so many germanics were serving in the roman army.
