V and A Instrument Gallery Closure

Postby Tamsin Lewis » Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:43 am

On 22 February, the V and A will close their musical instrument gallery permanently and put the instruments into storage. The exhibition space will then be converted to display more fashion items.

What a waste! And a loss of resources.

That is bad news. I don't get down to London that often, but had this on my list of things to see next time. Never seen it before, never will now as I won't get there in February. It was the main part of the V&A that would have interested me. At least from the article it seems some of the items will be displayed in the Horniman Museum.

Very sad, thanks for letting us know about it. Let's hope they come to learn from their mistake in the future, or properly transfer this important collection to another museum that would value it.

Presumably a response to not many people going to see them?

Whilst I find it sad when things I love go off display they do have incredible reserves and it is good to see things change and new stuff come out.

Oh phew, glad I went in January then - and had to go back twice as they were only open once a month, and then they did not tell me that when they were open they closed at 4.00pm. It was dreary and dusty up there, but the instruments were great. Lack of sign-posting to it did not help matters much. The staff member up there when I went was not interested at all, she was looking over the balcony to the room below all the time, looking very bored. So it made it hard to go up and ask her questions.

A bit like swimming-pools who turn the thermostat right down and then wonder why people stop going.

Thanks for telling us, Tamsin.

As a small concession, the V and A are opening the instrument gallery for a few extra days: today (14 Feb), then 19, 20 and 21 before closing for good on 22 Feb.

If people are interested then there are a couple of petitions to sign:

Also an excellent article here
