Any Groups near Southampton?

Postby IanS » Sun Sep 12, 2010 5:04 pm

Besides the Celtic group Weorod in Portsmouth does anyone know of any other groups in or near Southampton?

I have had a look but all I could find was Weorod and The Hampshire Regiment which turns out are based near London in Surrey

At the moment I’m just fishing for ideas since it will be another 9 months before I take on a combatant roll.

Hi Ian

I think Werod are an Early Saxon group, not a celtic one

Is there any particular period you are interested in?

There is a Napoleonic group based around Aldershot. I have just joined them and they seem a very friendly bunch. http://www.2ndfoot.org.uk/
I live in the Waterside area of the New Forest, so near Southampton. Depends what you want to do though.

See i cant even get that right

I used to be with Hounds of Morigan Medieval group but since moving down to Southampton in 2002 haven’t done any re-enactment so I’m open to suggestion. But I do like the idea of a non armoured group since I found if you wear armour on the battlefield in the past some tw*t will always try’s to put a dent in you.

Also it would have to be a non-com role since still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Ian

Is there a particular period you are interested in? You say that you used to be in a medieval group, but the medieval period stretches for a large period of time - if you are still interested in that time, is there a specific era you want to look at?

If you have a particular time frame in mind, once we know that, maybe someone can point you in the right direction

D'Oh! Good point :wasntme:

To be honest I’m open to anything really. I quite like the idea of a slightly more modern period like 17th 18th century.

I see there is a Pirate group near me on IOW so theoretically they are the closest but there is the little matter of the extortionate ferry to get there so regular meets would be a no go.

I don't know much about any 18th century groups, but for the 17th century, the English Civil war Society is the main mob (probably the main mob in UK reenactment, to be honest)

The Marquess of Winchester's Regiment is based in Basingstoke (Basing House, I think) and they cover Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, etc. Might be worth giving them a shout

Hope that helps a bit

Ahoy thar!
Yep there is a growing horde of pirates on Wight but we are busy and operate all over the south! Additionally many shows we have subsidised or free ferry passes!

If you fancy giving it a try we can lend you basic gear- there is an event next month 22-24th Oct with free ferry travel, accomodation and lots of fun!
pm me if you are interested!

We also have members who do early and high medieval too!

Regards, Mr Brand
