A living history group created around the household of a silk woman in late 15th century London and based in Essex.

Our website is currently being updated.

The Household is a group of experienced living history presenters who believe in maintaining a high standard of historical accuracy. We aim to have a comprehensive knowledge of our period and the lives and status of those we portray, taken from written resources available in, for example, the Public Record office and the British Library. We also make use of illustrated resources, where available, if they are suitable for our period.

In order to make our presentation as accessible as possible we re-create certain rooms in the house of a silkwoman 1483-85, within the framework of modern tents. These allow the public to be able to view the activity inside unimpeded. The individual rooms are defined by hangings and contain carefully chosen reproduction furniture and artifacts, to give a flavour of what it was like to live in a timber framed house in London, at that period.

In this context, we show the skills needed to support her lifestyle with a strong emphasis on the cooking and serving of the main meal of the day. We can also demonstrate a variety of shops including a Silkwoman, apothecary, scribe and tailor.

We are a purely living history group showing trade and domestic activity with no military roles. The group also has a strong research element in which all members participate and we meet in Essex over the winter months to share our research, make our clothing and plan our events.

We currently wish to recruit a cook with a strong interest in recreating appropriate menus for the Household both during the day and “after hours”. We do not expect you to start with an expert knowledge of period food and cooking techniques, neither do we expect you to do all the work. We would like you to take charge of your “domain” with the support of the group and be prepared to take on the research required for the role. There could also be roles for a cook’s partner/friend/family where appropriate.

No, I'm sorry but the group disbanded some time ago.
