Plate mail help plz

ok im just starting out with plate mail and i need to know what gauge of steel to use for what parts of a suit (im going later today to pick up the steel), any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you after plate armour or mail? Plate armour is sheet metal bent into interesting compound curves; mail is little rings all joined together so that it looks like knitting but isn't.

For plate, the usual is 16 gauge, although sometimes 18 is used. Helmets are often 14. I've no idea what the SCA wants - do they have their own discussion board? Your best bet is probably to find it (if it exists - it probably does) and ask there.

For mail, I'd now always go for riveted stuff from Get Dressed for Battle. But in the old days, mail made of spring steel split washers was considered posh. If you weren't posh (or didn't have strong wrists), galvanised fencing wire or old wire coathangers were options.
