Help needed please - I'm making Saxon tunics for Hastings this year and I'd like to know if a fur collar would be authentic on a wool overtunic.
I just happen to have this narrow fur stole I could use. It would look good, but would it look right?

In a word, no.
The guides at http://hastings.vikingsonline.org.uk/H2006/ suggest embroidery or braid decoration. While fur may have been used to trim cloaks, there is no evidence for it being used on tunics, to my knowledge. The Hastings mailing list is probably a better place for this sort of question - see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hastings_2006/

Try Ali at Herts Specialist Fabrics - www.hertsfabrics.co.uk - not shown on his website is the small selection of tablet-woven braids at £10 + a length.
or look on ebay - search under 'tablet weaving all categories' (or 'crafts'); there are a couple of women who sell there from time to time - some with metallic or unsuitable threads , some without. At present

Steve the Weave does a large reage of tablet woven brades in wool and silk if you require finder finishes. For 1066 I'd suggest his fine wool brades. pm me and I can send you his email address. If he's not got the colour mix you want in stock he can usually make it for you in a few days - obviously depending on what other work he's got on.
Having purchased from him for the past 20 years I can't reccomend him highly enough.

Got to second Steve the Weave - his tablet braid is quite simply the best there is - he thoroughly deserves the nickname.
And not only that, but his prices are some of the best around.
