Sewing Children into Clothes 19th/20th C

I should probably put this in the 19th C section, but more people look here!

I've read a couple of hearsay accounts of sewing children into clothes for the winter (doctors and teachers coming across it up to the 1970s), and there is a reference in _Goodnight Mr Tom_. I wonder does anyone know of any contemporary sources 19th or 20th C relating to this practice. Was it really for warmth?

Thanks

Aoife

My mother was a teacher in an inner city infants / Junior school in Leeds in the 1960's & although this was not common it was certainly a practice that she saw on many occasions.
