1400 buttons

Postby Brian la Zouche » Fri Jan 27, 2012 9:40 pm

well i have searched the net and of course i can find buttons for sale however i dont think its simply a case of getting a period button ( 1400 - 1450 ( ish ) ) as id guess status would be taken into account, as to the type of button

im having a blue and white quartered wool tunic made ( for my ''frenchie'' role ) i do archery, and although not a low level grunt, as im wearing my lords colours, im really not much higher up the food chain

the ones i personally like are little dome shaped plain pewter ones with a protruding single eyelet underneath ( sorry dont know the techy term ) anyone with knowledge know if these are acceptable
i have also seen little round wooden ones , much like a modern button but with two holes not four, but im not too keen on these, but i try and conform to accepted standards so if these are the must have sort then fine

any help much appreciated

and if anyone sells what i need and is going to be at ILHF please gimme a shout

Did you especially want metal (cheaper now, expensive in period) or are thread or cloth/covered ones (expensive now and a pain to get looking right, cheaper in period) an option?

For that era the best ones are the cloth ball buttons unless you are well to do - talk to you tailor about how much it would cost. They appear in the MOL Clothing and Textiles book and instructions are in The Medieval Tailor's Assistant IIRC.

Cloth ball buttons are so easy to make, if a little time consuming, you could offer to make the buttons for your costumier, if you weren't making the whole garment, as a cost saving exercise. Whilst not everyone can make a full cote beautifully, almost anyone with working fingers and eyes can get good at this kind of button. 8-)

There are several sets of instructions on the Internet. If you were feeling handy you could make them for yourself.

Hi Brian,

The problem with buying them off the peg is that they ought to be made of the same fabric as the garment. Talk to whoever is making the garment, if they will do them it's probably best. If not, bring a chunk of the fabric being used (each button needs a circle about 3cm in diameter) and ask around at ILHF.

Most welcome Sir, lovely to meet you.
We had a most useful show, thanks, bank account healthier and all that.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm really ready for the season to start now, I want to be out in the fields with some campfires and a beer tent ASAP, it has felt like a long Winter.
