THE PURSUIT TO MONS SEPTEMBER 2018

Postby Stan Watts » Sun Nov 05, 2017 10:37 am

The official all Nations event of the International Cavalry Association to commemorate the last cavalry offensive of 1918 and the end of the war to end all wars. This is an international THANKSGIVING to celebrate the end of the war which took so many lives of the people of Europe.
The aim is to cover the line of the advance of the Army from Cambrai to Mons via Valenciennes. We will be covering 15-20 Km a day at cavalry pace. We are aiming for the route to be 90% cross country. This means we will start the day in the saddle ca 4 hours per day. This will allow teams who want to go to memorials etc or do work with their sponsors to use the PM for such things. This is a cavalry event. Cavalry are mobile. Therefore the riders will use pop up tents for the evening bivouac, these being moved on by truck. At no time will the ride take a loop route and it will be a new camp every night.

Be aware, this ride is not concerned in the gender of the cavalryman but whether they can ride at cavalry pace and have respect in kit for both rider and horse to the Unit they represent.

Please note: We expect not only single cavalrymen from across the world but also complete Units. Presently we have over 100 uniformed mounted troops and the same again in the ground crews. Ground teams and support are essential to keep the cavalrymen in the saddle. So, even if you are not a rider but want to be part of probably the largest uniformed cavalry campaign event to take place in Western Europe since 1918, please let us know.

That is a wonderful idea. Sadly I cannot ride a horse (at any speed) but as a member of the Poppy Collectors may I inform my local branch of the Royal British Legion about this and see if they would be interested?

Whilst those on horseback must be true horse'men' as they will have to be able to cover country at pace, hour after hour, we are always open to have support from the ground from those who are in period clothes (not an excuse for a civilian holiday). Cavalry in the saddle needs so much support from the ground.

Here is a post, just, on this date, put up on the Event's site:

THOSE WHO WISH TO BE PART OF THE PURSUIT BUT DO NOT WANT TO RIDE OR BE IN THE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT.
We are more than happy for anyone, with an interest in the Great War and the Pursuit to Mons to avail themselves of the facilities offered up by this epic ride. However, whilst we welcome you, if you are not part of a mounted member's team or of the logistical support we will be setting a fee of 300 Euros per head to use our campsites and be at the Gala Dinner in Mons at the end of the ride.

"as a member of the Poppy Collectors may I inform my local branch of the Royal British Legion about this and see if they would be interested?"

However Henri.. you might like to know that there is a similar event taking place in August of 2018 which has the official backing the Royal British Legion , Is raising funds for the RBL (last event we did raised over £2500 ) , contains serving members of the British army as well as many veterans, and unlike other events who refer to Commonwealth War Graves Commission sites as " Bone Yards" we will be visiting many interesting sites and paying due respects. Also our " Fee" for those taking part on foot is only £25 for the week.
You can find more information on Facebook on this page .. https://www.facebook.com/TheLastHurrah1918/

You are of course free to pick who you wish to support but this event is primarily based on Commemoration and raising funds for the RBL.

Thank You

This is an interesting post and thanks go to a couple of Serving Servicemen for pointing it out to me.

Stan could you tell us what the 300 Euros gets for the individual? while I acknowledge that 75 euros is for the dinner what is the 225 Euros for? does this cover transport and feeding? If so where is the transport from and to?

what is the Accommodation, I'm assuming that would be part of the fee.

what activities are planned for the non riders?

cheers

Pete L

Hello Pete

I can see you are new to this forum.

If you (us) want me to give all of you a breakdown of the costs of the 300 Euros, I am happy to do so. Just ask Andy for my email address lol

We on the Pursuit are so excited in that thus far we are well over 100 riders taking part from across the world. This is supported by a ground crew who are really enthusiastic to support those in the saddle.

One element which really is exciting is the large contingent of Canadians who have signed up. Nothing like the real McCoy

Ok, thats an odd reply! In so many ways.

Not sure who Andy is, and my interest was what the activities were, while I was aiming to head to the Somme next September anyway it may have been interesting to know what was going on.

Yes I'm a new joiner to the site but only just a bit newer than yourself so what is the relevance?

Pete.
