Must admit this was a good eyeopener, well presented by an academic (with a weird penchant for impressions) . If the far east is 'the forgotten war' then the med theatre, N africa, Egypt and Italy etc follows a close 2nd. It was well explanined and showed Churchils thinking and strategy well plus how the US played along for so long before Stalin got uppity. Loved the bit about Monty and the naked soldier in a top hat... People often forget that we 'ruled' Egypt around that time and the tales of imperialism, street protests etc looked very familiar to today. We dealt with it rather differently then though....

Covered the whole war in that area up to D-Day and is well worth a look at.

I shall check it out-my Great Uncle was in the 1st Army (2/4KOYLI) now that really was the forgotten army...poor sod now lies in a forgotten field in Tunisia by the side of a pocked road that ripped our front tyre when we visited, in fact the road to get to Tabarka is so bad it looks as though the last roadworks were when 1st Army were there!

Check out the D Day Dodgers as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4hny_XR ... re=related

Yep, I have one at Salerno plus 1, not pleasant at all. Made it off the beaches but then met a very professional and experienced SS Division that wasn't expected to have been there.

To think that if we'd (allies that is) liberated Rome only a week earlier, or D-Day had been delayed a wee bit then things might have been different and their blood sweat, toil and sacrifice wouldn't have been overlooked as much
