There will be a 17th century slant to Wakefield’s Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb with a new initiative for this year.
Clarke Hall will be taking part in the festival for the first time and it will be hosting daytime and evening events which tie in with the theme of the festival. Both events take place on Saturday February 28.
A Living History Day based around food and drink will take place throughout the hall from 10am until 4pm. Members of the Seventeenth Century Society, a group that specialises in bringing historic houses to life by portraying a seventeenth century household, will be cooking in the kitchen. Members will contrast the different status of food, preparing both poor food served to the lower class and very expensive food for the gentry.
The day will also include tea drinking ceremonies, a beverage that was extremely expensive in the 17th century, and will look at coffee merchants and rhubarb being used as medicine.

In the evening visitors to Clarke Hall can enjoy a night out with a difference . . . in the hall’s kitchen.
Sponsored by the Wentbridge House Hotel Brasserie and Restaurant there will be cooking demonstrations, entertaining talk and food tasting led by John Hudson and all taking place in historic surroundings.
The evening begins at 7pm. Tickets cost £12.50/£10 concessions.
