Lots of info out there, an assignment for school? Uni? Get onto the census and look at housing conditions, the Open University had a good series on BBC1 recently about streets in London, lots of social history on their website.

Go to your local cemetery, look at the average age of death-find out about cholera and Typhoid outbreaks..

Hell, it's so fascinating it makes me wish that it was my homework! :D

And if your place of study has a budget, I even do presentations on the workhouse and mourning in the 1800s!

Though at the same time there is more than enough material for someone to study social conditions of 1485. Rather than trying to Wikipedia stuff get to a library or bookshop and do some fecking research for yourself rather than asking people whose own knowledge may be seriously tainted to do your work for you.

Marcus, you are harsh, I'm glad that you're not my teacher. :)

However, you do make a very good point. It's Dan's project and he needs to do the research. Can we give him some tips or leads to get him started?

Dan, what was going on in Englan in 1485 that might impact on any or all of those things?
Find some books on life in the Middle Ages and cross-refernce what they say with what you know was going on.
Look in the bibliographies of those books to find more books that will give you other ideas and more detail.
Are there any major figures at that time who's life and biography might give you more information?

Personally I can think of at least half a dozen books on my bookshelf that could provide you an excellent starting point (and before you ask, I can't remember any of their names right now) and there are bound to be LOADS more out there that I don't even know about.

This is basically the process that many of us have gone through to build up our knowledge of the period, so it should server you well and give you some very useful skills.

Best of luck with it Dan.

Colin

I don't see myself as being a harsh teacher but one who encourages people to try and do things for themselves. I am always getting asked how to spell such and such a word. Now I can spoonfeed the wean and spell the pword for them or I can show them how to use a dictionary and then they'll never need anyone to help them spell words again. Way too many people expect google to do their work for them and you know that re-enactors are some of the worst people to ask if you want accuracy!

I partially agree with you (Which is why I've give Dan some pointers, rather than answers), but on the other hand, I've spent too long trying to fined neumatic in the dictionary...

socially people were killing each other rather slowly up till August 1485, when they killed each other at a greatly increased rate. In september they went back to only killing people socially again. and eating cheese

Dont know if this is a school, coolege or uni project, but your local library will almost certainly have some books with which to form a starting point - however most will be several years old so not really on the cutting edge of research! Find out who does research into this area - I think York & Sheffield unis both have good history departments with specialists in this area - many papers are available online these days (lucky sods), so try that.
