Tentage images

Postby RottenCad » Fri Nov 19, 2010 3:40 pm

What ho!

I've been trawling through a fair number of online resources (British Museum, Bibliotheque National and others), and a few books as well; what I'm looking for is a provenance for the lattice-work ridge pole that adorns many recreation pavilion tents.

Guess what?

Can't find one (well, one, but it may equally be painted canvas) .

Does anyone have a "secret resource" for tent images to which they could point me?

Many thanks,

Cad

Cad,
There used to be a great resource online on a Geocities account, but it has dropped out of existence. Fortunately, nothing on the web is ever truly dead - see /link removed/ instead for what seems to be a caches copy.

I checked that link and my computer successfully blocked a "Fragus Toolkit" hacking intrusion attempt from it , so be aware it could be harmful to your computer and your financial details. It also presents many foreign sources without comment, including all those "geteld" tents in English copies of foreign manuscripts (definitely not evidence for getelds in England), so as a "great resource online" it needs to be treated with extreme caution in more ways than one. :worried:

The request was for tent images, not verified images of tents in England, since there aren't many.

I'm sorry the suggested site seems to be infected - my systems filter such stuff before they get to my PC, so my anti-malware install detected nothing.

Another image that might interest.

Woodcut showing images of 16th century English (probably) tents used in Ireland.

Excellent response - thanks very much.

Based on the evidence available, then, I'll abandon the idea of the top-planked ridge, and work on an internal frame instead.

Paradoxically, even less evidence for how that works !!!

TTFN!

Fox: Top-planked ridge - the external tent ridge-pole, made from a latticed plank of wood. (Cf original post - do keep up, dear boy! ); Internal frame - standard framing for internal tent structure.

It's not entirely clear to me what you were talking about in talking about in the first post, and I'm still not any clearer.

Thanks everyone, there are some really useful images here.

Just to clarify, I was originally intrigued by some tents I had seen where the ridge pole along the top of the tent seemed to be formed by a plank running between the uprights.

Sort of something like this:

and I'm pretty happy not to have found any documented images so far.

Thanks again,

Cad

Hi Cad,

Is this what you mean by a attice-work ridge pole?
