Hi all,

Whilst on my hols in Ireland, I took part in the locally organised re-enactment of the French landing at Kilcummin and Killala in 1798. It was part of the Killala's heritage weekend and wider organised events that commemorated General Humberts, ultimately unsuccessful, invasion of Ireland and the Races of Castlebar. Re-enactors portraying French and English units provided the colour and noise, but the locals had organised themselves into the local forces that flocked to Humberts banner for numbers and a bit of craic. Great fun was had by all and the town of Killala was buzzing with how successful it was. Kit standards in the pike forces was non-existent but their efforts were made to look sort of the part and not authentic. Anyway, here is a few pictures.

Is the same French force that landed at Fishguard in Pembrokeshire and made one of the biggest mistakes in history?

No, that landed a year earlier, but it was all in the same mould.

Good pics! I couldn't make this one as I had a medieval show the same weekend but I can see at least one of our Honourable Company lads amongst the Lord Edwards lads: he's the Enniskillinger (27th Foot) brawling in the street. Typical!!
If it was anything like last years Vinegar Hill it was a blast. Literally. I've never fired so much powder before and what the locals may have lacked in kit they made up for in enthusiasm and fun.

It was loads of fun with plenty of craic. There was a lad next to me in the pike line, had a bit of drink, giving it "i'm gonna stab an englishman by the end of the day" in a forcefull manner. I turned to him, and in my Yorkshire accent said "I hope thats not me". That caught him off guard :D Theres talk of it happening again next year; fingers crossed.

Well , hope you got a pint out of him later! Hey, I'm envious. Mayo is a great county. I love going there.
