LMAO, thanks. And if you call Dominoes Pizza, you should get through to me, lol ;)

Really wanted to take some with a sword but I didn't have one of the right time period :( Sucks aswell because I was so close to buying one at Herstmonceux that would have been perfect! *facepalm* D'OH!

Nice work on the photos but I have to ask; what do you think would be 'the right time period' for which you could have bought a sword?

Celt. But I could have probably gotten away with something Saxon/Viking just to get the look. Would sort of screw it up if I was holding a hand-and-a-half :P

Thanks :)

Oh, I don't know. It wouldn't have been any more or less in keeping with the costume.

You've been here 5 days, the honeymoon's over and you're not the newest newbie anymore.
Anyway, spend more time around re-enactors and you'll come to realise that that WAS merciful.

Mwahahahahah....etc.

If that's the case, would this be a good time to mention that I have 4 yrs Kung Fu, 2 yrs Judo, 2 yrs Karate and was a self defense instructor..?? :D

You might have put an NSFW on that one old chap.....Personally I think that was a wee bit on the low side, giving the lady a chance to find a group of her own before taking potshots might have be a wee bit more generous perhaps? Sure, the pictures are a little bit "Red Sonia" but she wouldn't be the first reenactor on this site to "Costume up" for a non reenactment related photoshoot now would she?

Probably not. They're not really very useful skills to bring to any conversation.
I've got a polka-dot belt in Origami if that helps?

Thanks Captain! :D Me likes you, you take pity lol.

You're right about the pics, I wasn't really going for authenticity because I couldn't whip up an outfit in time so had to use left over leather. Hence slightly Red Sonja. But I tried to get it to look sort of believeable.

Then you might find you'd be interested in HEMA, histroical martial arts, (sometimes called WMA, western martial arts).
A lot of what you'd find in Foire (early 15thC Italian) will seem very familiar to you, for instance, but will also give you that genuine knowledge of how people defended themselves, both armed and unarmed in earlier periods of history.

The British Federation for Historical Swordplay is probably the place to start, although I don't think there's a group very close to you.

Lots of re-enactors dabble a bit [guilty of dabbling, m'lud], so, with a little patience, you might find something that way.

Alternatively, some of the groups do one day seminars if you're prepared to travel.

Since Fox mentioned it (but didn't supply a link) :
http://www.bfhs.co.uk/html/groups.html is a good place to start looking for a group near you.

Fiore (as mentioned by Fox) is one of the earliest 'styles' of which we have evidence, I33 is (probably) slightly earlier.

Or there's the Order of Scáthach, who combine Eastern and Western martial disciplines with Wican ritual in an attempt to recreate the techniques taught by Scáthach herself.

http://dunscathach.com/training.php

Based overseas but they do offer distance learning courses.
