From German Castle belived to be 16th century.
Any ideas.

I'll dig out the Crossbow books when I get home Badger, I don't recognise it straight away but the form looks familiar so it may be one I've seen drawings of rather than photo's. I'll get back to you.

With a rifle type trigger and rear sight I'd say it looks like a target crossbow, popular on the continent from (according to Payne-Gallwey) latter half of the 17thC to the first half of the 18thC. His example has a steel bow 2ft long and a stock 2ft 3in. If it's bigger it may be ealier.

yeah have to agree - although leaning more towards the C18th, looking at some examples in the book "Crossbows in the Royal Netherlands Army Museum" that's where I would hedge my bets.
