Re: Hussite Pavise
As my comment was eaten up by the forum update once more:
Nice!
Would you mind posting a picture of the backside (interested in the construction of grip/belt)?

Painting style works really well.
What are your construction methods, boards, canvas etc? What is that stuff around the pavise edges though?

Cheers - finally used your painting tuitiongregory23b wrote:Painting style works really well.

I made it from some ply I had spare, pegged together - edged with leather and then covered in canvas (the leather is the ridge you can see round the edges)
It's the first time I've attempted something this complex, but I feel confident enough now to do it again with purchased and improved materials (everything in the construction was spare, scraps)
the back isn't interesting - rope through holes in the wood
I'm just going to use it for display

Re: Hussite Pavise
I've done a similar thing, although I got bored with mine during painting, so its nowhere near as nicely painted as yours. I'm planning on making one using pine planks, pegs and PVA, and then covered in leather/parchment. After that I might risk it with lime wood, but I might do a different style shield with that. Whats your next one gonna be made out of?
Slowly realizing just how far is still to go.

Lime wood, probably about 3/4 the size of this one
I also used PVA on this one, would like to use animal glue next time

Looks good.
Is the leather edging based off anything in particular?
What size is this one?

Official Thumb biter.
Re: Hussite Pavise
There are a few in the MyArmoury.com thread which appear to have a leather edging http://radikal.ru/F/s39.radikal.ru/i085 ... b.jpg.html for exampleThomas Hayman wrote:Looks good.

It's 2' by 3'

English spellings were multiple - I'll apply the same logic to period Czechnarvek wrote:I am sorry to rain on your parade, but the inscription should be 'Buoh s nami' using period czech

Re: Hussite Pavise
SJP: Well, the point is, that the diacritic used by Craig (and the one on AB polearm you linked) is a much later (post-hussite). Hussite period is not really famous for it's advanced and intricate literature;)

Re: Hussite Pavise
Craig, that is not leather edging, at least not on the one in the link, that is a painted border, to contain the image. The leather is flush finished to allow the painting, you can see a 'ruled' edge that has corners.
The coverings for pavises generally overlap the inside face, not the outside face, ie the outer shell of cloth or leather laps to the user, not the enemy, you get a thicker ridge where the layers overlap, but not edging as such, but that is a general comment of course.
Go straight for animal glue or even cheese based glue for the boards.
Animal size for the painting with a varnish layer perhaps or just varnish based paint, you can use egg as well, depends on the complexity.

Craig,
I have a few shots of an old pavise that needs some reworking, they might be of interest to you, check this link and then see the ones next to it

Narvek is right about the spelling
It´s great to see someone is interested in our history.
Tabor city is 60 km from my home and Trocnov, born place of Jan Žiška is 13 km from my home.

Crawl? One pub in Tabor is plenty! The beer is dangerously good and way to cheap!
