Wild Bill's Colt Dragoon

Postby nick19thind » Thu Jun 02, 2011 2:52 pm

In addition to carrying a pair of ivory handled Colt Navy revolvers Wild Bill also owned a Dragoon which he may have acquired as a Jayhawker around 1855. Does anyone know whether it was the first (1848), second (1850) or third (1851) model and what the differences between the three types are?

See page 63 of Henry Krank's catalog for pictures of the three Dragoons. I'd imagine his gun would have been the Third model as this was the most common but i need evidence to back this up

Do contact the Frazier History museum in Louisville Kentucky, they have an outstanding collection of William (Buffalo Bill) Cody (actually De Cody) artefacts. There is a brilliant gallery just for Wild Bill's weapons and costume. Many super photographs as well.
The museum can be found here: http://www.fraziermuseum.org/exhibition ... n-history/

Errrmmm my mistake, In my mind I read Buffalo Bill for "WILD BILL" HICKOK. Sorry, but do have a poke about the Frazier collection none the less. I'll just go out behind the shed and flagellate myself.......

Indeed it was a third model.
There were some references in the contemporary local newspapers that at the time of the Dave Tutt shootout Hickok was carrying a 3rd model dragoon. The "witnesses" were about half/half whether he used the Navies or the Dragoon. not sure of the calibre
