Victorian Martial Arts in Guildford

Post by Matt Easton »

Hi all,
I have been running a historical European martial arts school, Schola Gladiatoria, since 2001 and I also run FightCamp annually.
I will soon be opening a new class specialising in Victorian military sabre and bayonet fencing in Guildford, which I thought may be of interest to some of you here.
For full details about Schola Gladiatoria, see:
http://www.fioredeiliberi.org

Regards,
Matt

Hi Matt

Could be interested as it's just down the road.

Your website says "TBA" in Guildford. Any plans as to where or when?

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy, no venue or day confirmed yet. I'm moving to Guildford in January, so I'll get onto it then.
Cheers,
Matt

Welcome to the area.

I'd be interested to see what you do once you are all set up and moved in.

It would make a change from Victorian martial arts with a lance..!!

Cheers,
Andy

A-ha, so this is you here then...

http://www.englishmartialarts.com

Do you plan to do anything not at the weekends?

Having cuddies weekends are always bad unfortunately.

Oz was/is teaching c17th pokey swords at Farnham sports centre, so any plans to do anything there? (interested as it's right on my door step)

Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Oz's group is the English Martial Arts Academy, teaching mostly backsword according to George Silver c.1600: www.englishmartialarts.com
My group is Schola Gladiatoria, teaching medieval weapons according to Fiore dei Liberi and Victorian sabre and bayonet: www.swordfightlondon.com

Oz's main class is in Haselmere, mine is in Ealing (West London), but both of us have secondary classes (or I will have soon..) in Guildford.
We are mates and colaborate on events, like this:
http://englishmartialarts.com/revolution/

If you decide to register for that event, please say you heard about it from me :).

In regards to which evening I will run my Guildford class, I don't know yet because of hall availability, but it will certainly not be on a Saturday or Sunday (may be on a Friday though).

Cheers,
Matt

Yes, I saw the advert when I took my son to Karate, but after swapping mails with Oz I wasn't sure about silver. I do sabre already according to La Marchant (spelling?) but as that is mounted and against static targets.

There are a couple of halls we used with the KUGB in Guildford which may be of use - if I can remember their damned names.

Cheers, and happy new year,
Andy

Any pointers on available halls would be very much appreciated. For the beginning at least, cheapness is the most important factor whilst we try to get enough regular students to cover the costs!

Matt

Some info here..
http://www.guildford.gov.uk/guildfordwe ... nity/halls

We have used Onslow Village Hall and the Belfields Community Centre.

Belfields is probably cheeper as Onlsow Village Hall is the nicer of the two.

I hope that helps,
Andy

Try also

http://www.surreyca.org.uk/directorysearch.html which will give you halls in surrounding areas & villages.

The Boyce building at Aldershot Military Museum might be worth looking at. You might even get a deal given the nature of what you are planning but I'm not sure if it is available in the evening

Thanks John.
I'll make some calls once I'm settled in (assuming the snow doesn't prevent that...).

Hi Matt are you still looking for venues? I have got through work a useful spreadsheet showing hundreds of venues in Surrey with details of hire rates, facilities etc. PM me an email address if you want a copy.

Just a little update on this - I'm currently trying to work out the best day for me (and others interested). Mondays are looking like the favourite at the moment.

Hi guys, I thought I had put an update on this thread but clearly I forgot!

Basically, after settling down to life in my new house I decided that running my London class and doing all the other things I have to do (mostly commuting!) was taking enough of my time and left the idea of a Guildford-based class on the back burner. Basically I decided that I didn't want to stretch myself too thin with another formal class, so sorry about that :(.

However... now that things have settled down a bit I am considering doing occasional (non-regular) semi-formal sessions, probably on Sunday mornings from time to time. The idea being to just arrange occasional meet ups when convenient with a few interested people and go through some stuff. I'd probably do 19thC (mostly infantry sabre) some times and medieval (mostly longsword) other times, depending on what the majority attending want to do.

I have a few people interested now, so if you're up for it let me know and I'll add you to the list and let you know whenever we decide to have a meet up.

Cheers,
Matt
