Is Lully's "Middle Class Gentleman" now off limits?

Postby Henri De Ceredigion » Tue Oct 31, 2017 10:46 pm

Ever since Horrible Histories' prom featured not only Lully's "Ceremonial March of the Turks" from "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" but also his stupid death (getting gangrene from a wound after bashing it with his baton conducting a Te Deum for Louis XIV) I have spent a long time trying to find a performance and the script of it. Thankfully this evening I did so and found an immediate problem. After the march when the Turks enter on stage they all declare "Allah Akbar" ("God is Great" in Arabic) which unfortunately is often shouted by people before, during or after a terror attack, therefore would like to know if people therefore consider any performance of this to be off limits (or at least with that section removed)?

No, removing it would be silly. Assuming of course you are performing it within a normal sort of venue, and not whilst wandering down the street.
