Can anyone provide provenance for this image?

I found this image somewhere on the Interweb (can't remember where):

Image

Can anyone shed any light on its origin?

By the clothing I'm guessing it's early 17th Century. I have a sneaking suspicion it may well be modern and made-up, though.

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks.

I've always known it as associated with this article-

I assumed it was an image of C17th colonial troops as a result but now I look there's no reference or cited connection at all.

What are you attempting to prove or disprove?
English Colonists in New England had a right rag tag collection of military equipment sent out wiith them.

I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything. This pre-supposes I already have a conclusion and now I'm looking for evidence to support it (or disprove it). This seems to happen a lot amongst re-enactors. I've taken to calling it "Conclusionism".

I'm looking for quite the opposite - I have a question I don't have an answer to and I'm looking for relevant evidence. I will draw my conclusion from that evidence.

If the image isn't relevant I can disregard it. That's all.

Keep an eye on this one...trying to inject reason and thinking into the hobby. Next thing, we'll all be forced to do REAL historical research instead of asking older reenactors or sutlers. The results could upset the entire reenacting world.

For the better.

Not the entire world, surely?

I have a number of books, and have even opened some of them :-)

When I visited James town in 1997, the armourer there told me that the English settlers discarded the pikes with which they had originally been equiped and replaced them with sword and target as better suited to forest fighting.
