Can anyone advice me of a good maker of 'authenti spades' - the iron shod wooden ones you see about?

A combination of Chris Anson for metalwork and Paul Bennet/ Paul Atkins and Joolz Reynolds (all PMable here) for the woodwork'd get summat nice too.

Thanks Phil for the links matlus has some nice stuff, I don't think the spades are badly priced either - you could pay a similar price for a modern one!

Thanks again

Whilst we are on the subject does anyone know of any online images of spades and shovels from the period.

I have found http://www.btinternet.com/~stephen.henl ... ook6-4.jpg from 'De Re Mettalica' (1556) that shows what appears to be an all metal blade shovel. The text that acompanies this in the book says that a miners "... hoe and shovel are in no way different from the common articles, with the one they scrape up earth and sand, with the other they throw it into vessels"

Does anyone have any clear pictures of the wooden iron cladded spade or shovels?

In case anyone else is interested I forwarded the Marolois pictures to Tod and he quoted a spade would be £160 and a hoe £210.

Not cheap but you know the quality would be first class
