Psalm singing

Post by Bevis Gittens »

I have recently read that Psalm singing was popular in England from 1560 onwards. ''The Booke of Psalms' by Thomas Stenrhold, John Hopkins and others, had 78 known additions from 1560 to 1600 alone. I would love to learn a few to sing whilst doing my Tudor (and Stuart for that matter) re-enacting. I have found a complete reproduction of Sternholds booke fo pslams on Google books (Albeit a 1791 edition) at http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=0qlb ... q=&f=false

But I am having trouble finding music to go with this. Does anyone know of audio files or scored music of the music these would be sung to?

The Ravenscroft Psalter of 1621 includes many of the older tunes from Sternhold. The melodies are older but the harmonies are earlier 17thC.

I used to know of a better link to earlier psalm tunes but don't seem to be able to find it...
