How do you wash six sheepskins?

Post by r33nact0r »

Yes folks - I have bought six of them to make a bed covering, but they are filthy, and I have heard that you can't wash them in a machine, so what's the best way, and what sort of detergent should be used? I'd be grateful for any advice - no smart or facetious comments please.

In a machine is fine so long as it's one at a time with normal detergent and half a bottle of glycerine per load (buy if from a chemist). 40 degree wash.

what sized bottle of Glycerine? my bottles of glycerine are all litres, the supermarket ones are 15ml!

I've heard of people doing well with sheepskins in the washing machine on the wool cycle with normal woolwash detergent, but be prepared to work over th leather side as they dry to keep them supple

I haven't done it for some time but having a look I think they would have been 200ml bottles I used to get. So approximately 100ml. I think the glycerine helps with that dry leather side issue. Ah - just checked and it glycerine that goes into Saddle Soap.

Hi there, I have a related question...
I washed 2 sheepskins on the woolcycle, one is fine but the leather on the other has "shrunk" and is really stiff.
Does anyone know how I can restore it, should I wash it again with glycerine in the wash?

Best wishes

You can try that... or work it with saddle soap to loosen it up? (If glycerine is one of the ingredients in the saddle soap, there'd be no need to re-wet it? Not sure)

My friend washes the sheepskin rugs she uses on the floors of her house in the machine on a normal wool wash. She says she has to comb the wool out afterwards though, as it can get tangled sometimes, but they come up a dream, once she's done it.

Thanks Lady Willow, just checked the tub of saddlesoap and it does contain glycerine. I'll let you know how I get on.

Would pre-treating the skin side with Nivea (other skin care products are available), say 24-48 hrs before the wash be of any use? I'm just theorising ...

Progress report
I saddlesoaped the skin, applying it several times to the really cardboardlike areas and it did soften the skin to some degree but not enough to make the skin lie flat. I bought some glycerine and added approx 1 large tablespoon to both the powder and conditioner drawer of the washing machine and washed it on a halfload woolcycle and line dryed the fleece.
Perfect results.

Your results will always depend on the method of tannage used in the first instance. If your hide was tanned using allum and Formaldehydes, the result could go either way. Chromium tanned hides usually fair better but even these can go horribly wrong.
