Fluffy thingy for cleaning your arrows, any more info?

Postby Naomij » Sat Sep 03, 2011 5:29 pm

For his bday my bro (dark ages to early medieval and does a spot of archery) requested a 'fluffy big tassle thing to clean my arrows on'. He'd seen or heard about it and couldn't remember where, I did find a contemporary version online but just winged it for something vaguely passable. I just made a big fat tassle from madder dyed Aran weight yarn, and to stop the strands from getting pulled out, naalbound over the top part to hide where I'd tied it and sewed that on firmly. It had a finger braided cord to attach to his belt or whatever. He seemed pleased enough but neither of us know of actual sources etc for such a thing, so I thought I'd ask here :) to see if I can refine it to make it more authentic (also this one was rather pink so a new one would probably be gladly received!)

Pink is a perfectally good and very manly medieval colour. I have no idea what a tasslely thing that cleans arrows would look like, or be used or even if they existed though. Mind you I have never felt a need to try and clean an arrow either. At least he didn't ask for a foxtail.

Thanks for the reply :)
Found a contemporary version which reckons it's ok for re-enactment, wish I'd seen it before! I am rubbish at googling

They are a very modern thing, used mainly in competitions.

Not sure of any sources for them, certainly not for the DARK AGES (that comment is because it is like Beetle Juice, it will summon Medicus)

Really not sure when they started, but I suspect they are like the Medieval/Scout Chair.

Thanks, I won't get too worried about making another then (tho it was quite fun and easy!)

Balls to the lot of you.

Naomij, 'Dark Ages' is Early medieval. Remembering that little nugget of knowledge alone will put you head and shoulders above the ignorant herd.
You're probably already head and shoulders above Goose....unless you're a midget.

Why would you want to clean your arrows? Nice bit of dirt never hurt anybody; well, apart from promoting arrow-fever, obviously, but that's a good thing, isn't it? ;)

Honestly, I've been shooting 16 years in re-enactment and have never needed to clean my arrows. I think if I did I'd just wipe 'em on a bit of grass!

I did use an arrow-cleaner in modern target archery, but that's because that is all about fine accuracy, not general distance and man-suze targets!

Dance like nobody's watching, love like you've never been hurt.
