11th - 14th Century Gambeson

Post by Andy Mac »

Hi All,

I'm after a Gambeson that can cover the 11th - 14th Centuries. Was thinking of mid thigh in length, to go under chainmail.

Can anybody recommend a good retailer (web address) looking to pay £60-£80 pounds.

Also looking to purchase a very good quality Templars Cloak/Robe, or is it relatively simple to make on

Many thanks
Andy Mac

Dunno about the £80 part but Debs ( posts as "2d" on here ) is a very competent gambeson maker

Price is a little low shall we say :D

If you'er looking for a good gambeson, expect to tripple that price (or more), or to make it yourself.

As to a cloak, you really want a semi-circle of fabric. If you can't get the length, then add onto the bottom edge to get your semi-circle. If you want it more full, add more sections of the circle to the front edges. It shouldn't be difficult. Line with wool for extra warmth. Important part is getting the right fabric.

Best of luck.

Wow! Prices have come down a bit since I last looked. That's good news.

Oh, it's been at least 10 years since I had a serious look at padding. I guess I'm really out of date! Last time I saw anything like that price, it looked like one layer of blanket in a cotton surface! It's good to know that high standards are becomming affordable now.

Best wishes and thanks for lifting the 'fog from my eyes'.

Another place you could look, although really unless you can try it on and it fits really nicely, then get tailor made:
