Robert the Bruce - heraldry.

Postby Stuart Quayle » Sat Dec 27, 2008 9:15 pm

I am trying to establish the heraldic coat of arms of the famous - Robert the Bruce - king of the Scots between 1306 - 1329 and hero of Bannockburn. What I really need is his Bruce arms rather than the royal arms of Scotland after he became king.

I think that Robert Bruce's heraldic arms are: Argent, a lion rampant azure i.e. white background with a blue lion rampant thereon, but I am not sure.

If any kind soul could confirm that these arms are correct for this particular Bruce and/or provide me with an image of them I would be very grateful.

yours hopefully
Stuart

It seems someone has already been fascinated by this thorny and extremely complex subject and there is a series of articles starting at:

then:

and beyond.

The "Glovers Roll" of 1252 gives the arms of Piers de Bruce as "argent, a lion rampant azure", which ought to mean that Robert carried the same - see

Brother Ranulf, thank you so much for this fascinating information.

Reading through, towards the very bottom of the second article it states that Adam - Baron of Skelton (who bears the arms - argent a lion rampant azure) leads us directly in lineage to Robert the Bruce, so that bodes well.

I am almost certain I have seen Robert the Bruce and his wife pictured in an ancient manuscript somewhere on the net, Robert being shown wearing a long, white, heraldic robe bearing a blue lion rampant, however I cannot re-find it.

The blue lion seems to be of Flemish origin, which would tie in with Robert's potential Norman or Flemish ancestry.

Many thanks again for your kind assistance.

best wishes
Stuart
