Fabulous performance of Beowulf

Postby wibble puppy » Wed Sep 19, 2007 1:56 pm

Benjamin Bagby has been performing the story of Beowulf for years, accompanied by the harp. He's got a terrific reputation and finally I've seen a bit of what he can do.

check out http://www.abcnews.go.com/entertainment - you need to select the bit which says "more videos" (this will come up in a pop-up window so you need to allow pop-ups), and then choose "Entertainment" and then scroll to "'Preserving Ninth Century Entertainment". The clip is eight minutes long but most of it is an interview with Bagby. The clip of his performance is 3 minutes 20 secs in.

I think what he's playing here is looks like a lyre, although on his website it's described as an Anglo-Saxon harp - great stuff.

More available at http://www.bagbybeowulf.com/video/index.html , you can order his DVD of his performance too.

Enjoy! :D

Worked at the Butser Ancient Farm Project when Julian Glover was filming his performance - wrong shape of house but performed against that backdrop with a roaring fire in the centre of the floor it was brilliant!
