The Plaid is a fashion rather than a change in technology. It is a variation on the mantle which they have been producing in Ireland and Scotland for a very long time.

It is the belting over the mantle which creates the plaid which can be demonstrated from the 16th century onwards.

They are unauthentic - there is, as Cat says, the leine , but leine translates from Gaelic as 'shirt', and has never been taken to mean what is commonly referred to as a plaid today. Leine literally meant at the time "linen", so it's like saying "i'm wearing my linens" or your u...

If you can find a copy read McClintock, H.F., "Old Irish and Highland Dress" 1950 (art.5.65.h4 at the National Library of Scotland). It was written in 1950 and is still the primary reference of books being written in 2006. All he does is say this is all the literary evidence, this is all t...

it's amazing though isn't it how with more evidence, such as the recent finds up near inverness, the discussion becomes more clouded rather than clearer as all the differing views try and to fit the new evidence into their theories. I like reading on the Celts but often it only makes good historical...

picts

I'm interested in learning a thing or two about the Picts but wouldn't class myself as an even moderately well read. However having read the relatively new, published 2002, Osprey book on Pictish warriors I cannot help but notice a few obvious clangers. I was under the impression that since the earl...

the entire last leather armour debate with links to previous leather armour debates :)

Could be good if anyones found any new evidence otherwise we'll just be rehashing stuff in here.

As someone sitting in the crowd I can say they understood the necessity of the mask if not before but certainly after you and Mike cracked each other on the head a few times. These were quite often poking/drawing cuts to the face that I do not believe even a great helm would be complete protection a...

excellent!

I'm really an ideal customer as I'm not very fussy at all. I would imagine a thick felt would be sturdy and water proof while a blue or red colour would suit my outfit ;)

Felt hunters hats

Does anyone know a good source of early medieval "felt hunters hats"?

I require 12th/13th century headwear for Lanark and think most headwear I have is 14th/15th century.

cheers

William Wallace: The True Story of Braveheart

Author: Chris Brown ISBN: 0752434322 The blub says: "This title is a scholarly biography of William Wallace, published to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the execution of Wallace in August 2005." Pros: It is a scholarly biography of Wallace and probably the first one I've ever come across. It...

For anyone interested in this book: it is currently out of print so if you want to buy it you will have to go to a second hand book specialist. So Abe books or amazon are both excellent places online.

Fair enough stupid questioning is unhelpful. But it would save 20+ odd people asking the same set of questions if there was one set of answers in a public forum.
