Perhaps I should have said affordability rather than availability. At (I think) £15 a metre for Bernie's new stuff, it's in the price range of a lot more people.

Lower status stuff is what really floats my boat! I'm starting to get really quite excited about the availability of good fabrics. I've got a small amount of Stuart Peachey's undyed handwoven wool that will be handmade into a doublet by the ILHF. Similarly Bernie is now stocking a range of dyed in ...

but most of the other costumers seemed to have all women's clothes with the odd token jacket here and there. Is there a shortage of provision of men's costume, or are they getting it from other sources? I'm not sure quite who you are meaning - I trade at both fayres as a costumer and know the other...

Invite to trade at Caldicot

Fellow traders, Although it's now quite late in the year and I'm sure many of you have set your calendars already, we still have pitch space available for the weekend of 12th/13th September. For those of you who haven't been before, the event is run by the Early Medieval Alliance and is set in the p...

I've only used RH patterns twice, both times I thought to be quicker than drafting them from scratch. How disappointed was I? The 1670-1720 lady's hunting outfit, the sleeve heads were miles too small for the opening, side seams were different lengths when they clearly shouldn't have been and a vari...

I would consider running one on this side of the border if there were enough people interested and anyone could think of somewhere suitable to hold it.

It wouldn't need to be somewhere huge, but my workshop wouldn't hold more than me and someone else!

What do people think?

The MTA can be really difficult to follow, though it is invaluable in so many ways. It doesn't show the curve of the shoulder seam, I got this from Dave Rushworth's High Medieval Clothing booklet, and on the occasions when I need to make a pleated gown, it becomes essential. I'm always surprised too...

If the seam from collar to shoulder is curved downwards like a saucer rather than straight across, it helps the pleats lie from shoulder to centre waist. Otherwise, you might not have enough fabric in the body of the coat, to get really good pleats it needs to be almost circular. Hope that helps. Ja...

Tuppence and I have undoubtedly had more practice at cutting, but I agree with her, it's not really that scary (except when you can't afford to replace the fabric). It's the old carpenters adage, measure twice cut once. If in doubt, cut really generous seam allowances - and I mean generous, two inch...

Certainly happy to do plain ones for that price, can do most colours reasonably quickly.

I may even be able to organise machine embroidered badges too, but would need a little longer to arrange.
