The evidence for cotton in England between 1150 and 1300 is nonexistent. No clothing item I am aware of has been found in England, or within 250 miles of it for that period. The first recorded use of cotton in England, specifically cotton as in the now accepted context and not as in the finishing of...

Nearer to 1160ad than 900ad ish. The game and pieces were very different to modern chess. Go for a google and look for History of Chess – there was a really good website in the US but it’s vanished. Look also for Byzantine Chess, the very early versions are probably what made it here first. As a sad...

As for a few losses, about 90% of the Saxons did not make it off the battlefield and the Viking army suffered about 5% losses in all. What are those figures based on? 90% sounds incredibly high. The bulk of the saxon amy was out menouvered and out fought by better armed soldiers who where also much...

Fulford gate wasn't particually big if I understand correctly, and wasn't costly in lives lost or else Edwin and Morcar wouldn't have been able to lead such a large uprising only a few years after 1066, if you had to list every military encounter made in that year would you have to list all the lit...

"One Kingdom, Two Kings, One Duke, Two Battles and the Most Famous Date in English History"

If they can't get the number of battles right for 1066, three not two, then I doubt the film will be much better than brave pants was for representing Scottish history.

Worn beneath mail hose. 1. Just linen hose. 2. Leather hose – either separate or attached to the hose. 3. Thick linen hose – two or three layers of thick linen sewn into a reinforced hose. 4. Quilted hose, linen with some form of stuffing. There is also the Islamic style of encasing the hose in line...

That part of a dress would have the front and back with a panel down the middle. Into the seams are sewn small loops of cloth which are the points for the lacing. This fits the dress. I should point out that this is very much a Norman style of dress and unfortunately there were no Norman women prese...

Kate: Yes it’s a very good article; however the lady made an unfortunate mistake in the dress design. The constricted section under the arm in the dress is not a panel, but an area of lacing that aided the fitting on the dress. Besides that it’s a fantastic end product. Wiblick: RE: shoes.
