Re: Advice for a new trader

ILHF - Very friendly market and I'm not aware of any restrictions on what you sell or who trades. Market forces are what govern your sales so if you make stuff that people want you will be doing OK. There may be a waiting list but with the new venue you stand a good chance of getting in. TORM - Ther...

Re: Hose/Gaiters

Oh forgot to add. I don't know of any evidence for leather gaiters as you describe. You are portraying a musketeer. You therefore need to try and think like a musketeer. What were you issued? Is your regiment based in the field or in a garrision? (In the field you do more marching and wear out your ...

Re: Hose/Gaiters

Hi Danny, Welcome to the hobby. Whatever you do don't go down the road of rolled down socks. It was the fashion 20 years ago but is wrong. I'm not a fashion expert and there is likely to be someone with more knowledge than I but hopefully below will help. Hose are usually knitted wool.(If you had lo...

Re: Seeking advice on finding and joining a group

Where are you based? That may help with people contacting you if they have members in the area. We do mainly English Civil War but have also done other periods over the year with a number of groups. Each group will have it's own personality and these change with time, for example a group that had lo...

Re: Kelmarsh Trading

Based on past experience about 50% of our sales are to MOP's. We don't really have anything over about £35 for MOP's but they are willing to spend up to this amount. The MOP's have parted with a significant amount to get into the event, they have travelled some distance, possibly stopped over night ...

Re: Breeches and hose

There are lots and lots of tache hooks or clothing hooks found but few are shown on pictures. As a suggestion perhaps these were used to hook the tops of hose to the inside of britches or skirts. Perhaps they were sewn on the inside of the britches and hooked into the hose? These clothing hooks are ...

It's a number of years since I have been to Alnwick Fayre. Do they still have the ducking stool where the same young ladies seemed to keep voluntering throughout the day?

Re: ECW units

As you are in Yorkshire I would suggest Tower Hamlets Trained Bands. Although SK I cannot remember the last time I saw any of their ladies cross dressing. If you prefer Royalists then you could try ourselves.

Re: Trade Pitch discounts idea

Kelmarsh is a totally different type of client to LHF or TORM. We deliberately have a giftware range for the public and reenactors who are looking for a historically inspired gift. If we did not have this range then Kelmarsh would be a nonstarter. Usually at least 50% of our sales are giftware to th...

Re: Anyone trading at the Bishops Palace in December

We took the decision not to trade at this years market. This is for several reasons but one of them was the proposal that they were expecting more visitors this year. We thought that if you get even more visitors then the press will be so great that our sales would be down. For example last year on ...

Childrens victorian costume

Hi

My daughter's school is doing a Victorian (1880s) event next month and they want all the kiddies to go in costume. They have given us parents some ideas but we wondered if there were any sites that we might be able to get patterns etc. from.

Many thanks

New Recruit You need to decide who you are going to join and then take their advice as to what to purchase. In both the SK and ECWS there are excellent regiments for Living history and authenticity, there are also regiments who are geared to enjoying themselves on and off the field but their kit wou...

Martin Try your local Business Link and Training and Enterprise Council. If there are any grants or help out there they should know about them. The Princes Trust used to do something but I think there are some age restrictions as it is aimed at young people. I'm not certain of their definition of yo...
