If they were knitted wool my mony would be on Paul Meekins Books (as at Kelmarsh the Stockings, Bandoliers and leatherwork stall was seperate from the books. If they were the thiner cotton type then I'd suspect Quatermasterie (who were selling all sorts of stuff....Pottery, buttons, fabric, horn ite...

Mallinson - early ones yes, I find the later ones are becoming less good

Try Iain Pears - An instance of the Fingerpost or The Dream of Scipio. Both rather complex, told from multiple points of view but good meaty and solid.
