Re: Cambridge Living History & Vintage Fair
Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is going to be a leather supplier at the Cambridge Fayre? For various reasons I have only been to a few events last year, and I've put the incense side of the business on hold for the moment (although I have still enough stock for demonstrations). My main trade is now...

Two markets....
Anyone got any views (or feedback) on the running of TORM and the re-vamped NLHF on the same days within a few miles of each other??? I was at TORM, which was an excellent event for me personally, and my impression was that the two markets were complimentary with many customers attending both. So wh...

Re: Chimera Costumes
Trouble is that when a relationship falls to pieces, especially one that is connected with your business it is very very difficult to keep going in the same field, as you suddenly realise how much you relied on each other. Add to that the lack of enthusiasm to keep going and building, and however ta...

Re: Morocco?
I can't see why we would import leathers from such a distance given that we exported leather to France and the cost differential would not have been worth the journey given the more expensive cargoes that were on offer. I was referring to the finish on the Morocco leather which I still understand w...

Re: Morocco?
PS the bookbinding leather that we call Morocco is probably 18thC? But I could be wrong. Wikipedia suggests that it was certainly used from the late 16th century, so it may well have even been around earlier. Certainly the tanneries in Fez date from at least the 12th century, and they still use the...

Re: Morocco?
According to Moroccan archaeologists one of the seventeenth century queens of Morocco was originally an English captive, but I have never been able to discover what her name was Might or might not be relevant, but there is a wonderful middle eastern dessert (not desert!) called Om Ali. Literally , ...

Tamzin, your links here are very very useful, especially the description of Edmund Hogan's visit to Marrakech, and meeting with two englishmen resident there, and the mention of there being other traders there. Thanks!!
If this goes any further I'll pm you.

Morocco?
Has anyone know if there were any links between the UK and Morocco prior to (say) the 18th century? Any trade routes, known travellers, etc etc. Obviously there is "Morocco" leather coming up to this country, which was used a lot in bookbinding, but are there any other products known from that regio...

NMTF letter
A letter has been sent from Head Office to all NMTF Historic Traders stating that there was a "suggestion" earlier this year that "certain commodities" would not be insured. This is a diplomatic understatement and at one point this change was the ongoing policy of the insurers, not just a suggestion...

Just received a phone call from Head Office regarding the meeting last Tuesday, and all is in order. There is now no longer a problem. There was a major one, believe me. But it's been sorted out. I'll explain everything later!!!!!!

Re: how much stock do you take to fairs?
As much as you can! It's very important visually at the end of an event to still have a decent display, and it's usually good to have a few high status items that you don't think will sell, simply because people look at them, say that's very nice but I can't afford it -then buy a cheaper item on whi...

Re: How are you finding trading at the mo ?
By and large I've never been busier. However, I've noticed a marked drop in the number of off the peg sales and a large increase in made-to-measure orders. What that signifies I've no idea, perhaps that people are planning their money more, rather than impulse buys, but it makes very little differe...

Historic Traders AGM
For reasons that will be explained later it has become essential to delay the AGM of the Historic Trader's branch of the NMTF for a few weeks. This is now planned to take place at the Berkeley Skirmish at the end of July, instead of Tewkesbury as in the past. Formal notices will be sent out ASAP!

Re: How are you finding trading at the mo ?
I've personally shifted policy in that I now am very cautious of events where I am not pretty well certain are going to be profitable. The massive increase in the cost of fuel over the last few years means that the further away from Norfolk a show is, the less likely I am to book in. First priority ...

I'm going to have to give Tewkes a miss this year, Sad, yes, but it's a very long way from Norfolk and with things as they are at the moment (cash flow problems and the current price of diesel), as Kelmarsh is the following week then paradoxically if I make a profit at Tewkesbury then I won't have e...

Hmmm... Hate to say this but are these possibly "scam" orders, pretending to come from all over the place, but in fact international money laundering schemes. I've had quite a few of those (none from Ireland incidentally), my favourite being from an address in Cairo. When I told them that I knew exa...

Re: Demonstrators who can work on hardstanding
My trading tent is fine on hard standing, but would need to have weights to hold the guys if there was a strong breeze. Would anyone be able to provide the weights (as at Stockport where the stalls were weighted down)? Otherwise, maybe I should invest in some.

My way (with the books) is to never take a deposit -but then 100% payment on delivery. Therefore in order to survive, and be paid, I have to be able to present the client with the goods before I get the cash. But then I have the advantage that if the client does not like the book, or decides against...

Having said all this, I (personally) don't think that we have too much to worry about. In the last 38 years of trading (yup, that long  ) I have only ever had t...

The main thing to remember that this is "friendly fire" :? When you produce your own goods, its very simple. You charge what you know it's worth to ...
