Or you could just buy the pitch - I know it's not as exciting. Dan at traditional materials will have some I am sure.
I think as you say you are looking for layers. Mittens could be a plan too.

Re: Where to start? UK Reenactment
Don't buy anything before you have spoken to the group you want to join - something that seems perfect to you now may be completely wrong - they may also have some stuff you can borrow for an event so you have a go before you invest a lot of money. You need clothes, shoes, before you have any armour...

You might also want to add to that a coat (and depending on when you are in this period a hood) and an apron or two

I would say the majority of troops would be dressed like this http://www.tudortailor.com/bookshoptks.shtml it's a pretty good guide to the clothing of the period for most men who were likely to be fighting at Flodden *yes I know there would be some exceptions but even they wouldn't wearing anything ...

In general the Scots took more of their influences from the French than the English however remember the Border at this period was fairly loosely drawn and so I would expect to see a variety of styles

patterns for boys clothes
A friend of mine is looking for a pattern to make her son a jacket for Christmas - Napoleonic era (or there abouts) - doesn't need to be absolutely perfect. A pattern would be simpler. It's not my period can anyone direct me to where she might be able to get a pattern. She's pretty competent
Thanks

Optional really depending on whether it would make you more comfortable and warmer - if that's what you're bothered about then I'd use wool to line it
If your hood is very smart then you could use fur?

Re: Flodden kit and info please
The difficulty is there very little that has been written recently on Scots clothes at this period - In general Lowland Scots tended to follow European fashions. They seem to have leant towards French styles rather than English at this period ( so a bit less square in shape for the men for example L...

You see whilst I take Jack's point about builders and you perhaps taking some layers off when you're working in addition to Jack's pictures there are one's of people like potboys for example too although to be honest not as many as many modern men probably think are necessary or would do so ( think ...

Lucet cord as Mally said would be fine for your purposes A couple of questions - when in the 16th century are you aiming for? In general (and there exceptions either way) - before 1550 the bodice and the skirt tend be joined at waist making an all in one garment http://www.moleiro.com/miniatura.v.ph...

If we are talking about what most people did for the majority of the time in the past as now - it was not fight. I agree Marcus the reality of a modern battlefield is not something that most of us would want to see really. Neither would I want to recreate the reality of the plague pits. However it p...

Plaits are your saviour really - when my hair was waist length I used to split it and plait it and then put it under a simple linen coif with long strings which then allows you to secure it. You can pin/add any headdress you want over that. The big advantage to having your hair covered is that it st...

I keep them in a separate bag and only allow them out at re-enactments so they have excitement of novelty
