Re: looking for Viking - medieval groups in Scotland?

whoops, sorry about that, I'd meant to include location in the original post! It's predominantly around Ayrshire, Argyll and Bute but I'll take anything you have that I can take back as information, it may be useful later!

Thanks for the replies so far :)

looking for Viking - medieval groups in Scotland?

Hi everyone, A friend of mine has been trying to find reenactment groups in Scotland for some time now without luck. I had a Google myself and found a few groups but the websites were a bit out of date so I thought it best to check here. Does anyone know of, or are part of, any groups in Scotland? M...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Wow, I need to check this thread more often! I'm not very well at the moment friends so please bear with me, I may not reply for a little while at a time but I will come back. Firstly thankyou Sophia, I actually have that exact book (I also bought it from Amazon) and it is indeed a very well written...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

I have a book very similar in name as that, just not so costly, which recounted the Crusades from the point of view of the existing population. Thanks for the suggestion Dave, it's another book I can get my hands on. I really struggle to find books about the history of Islamic nations that are both ...

Re: Medieval Medicine.

Although Islamic texts did take a lot from prior civilisations, they did do a lot of further exploratory and diagnostic work themselves and built on top of what they did take from others. In the same way, all civilisations took medical information from others, then built on top of it, often seemingl...

Re: Medieval Medicine.

I was thinking of eventually doing something similar myself - you could have a look at the Islamic medicinal texts too. Certainly for the general medieval periods, a lot of the information gathered about the biology of man, the nervous system etc was borrowed from Islamic scholarly studies, as well ...

Re: Dog types in Medieval/Tudor/Stuart times

A demi-wolf could easily be a WolfDog, they've been around since man first started accepting a more domesticated wild dog to live with them. I am also in love with them.

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Thanks to everyone so far for the contributions :D I'm seeing a lot of the same point, which are that if you saw someone dressed this way in an English battle then it wouldn't be acceptable, which is perfectly acceptable in itself - as someone else said, there are plenty of mulitperiods to be gettin...

Re: A question of Maille

Wow, good question. I've just done a little Google search and from what I came up with, apparently 'Amourer' works, but outside of that a 'Mailler' or 'Linker' works too. I've never actually heard anyone referred to by any of those names besides Amourer though. I was wondering too, am I correct in t...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Marc, I certainly take you point about the fact that most of the time these are UK shows depicting UK units and it was the reason I hadn't started attempting this in all the years I wanted to do it. However as you say, there are multiperiods where anything seems to go sometimes, so even if it means ...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Thanks Cola, it's good to hear. Yeah I'm aware that some people will be hesitant, and I was worried about the perspective that I may appear less armoured or protected than I am. Taking hits isn't an issue, I'm hard and I sort of enjoy a really good slap about anyway, but it's making sure that the pe...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Ok guys, here's some of the pics I promised earlier of kit peices I'm looking at - I'm doing this for a reason, which you'll see in a moment. You've seen an example of the Khazaghand I linked earlier in the thread, which would have a chest peice of Lamellar armour over the top, as thus: http://i149....

Re: Black armour - right or wrong?

I'm certainly no expert but when I was doing 15th Century, my research led me to believe that blackened armour was common as it was a direct result of a forging process - to have shiny silver armour was to add a lot more to the finishing process, whereas the forge blackened happened normally after t...

Re: 14thC Islamic kit

Hi everyone, After years of just reading this website, I've decided I finally have a need to actually write something here :) I've spent around 5 or 6 years doing 15th century English combat and living history, and then took a fairly long break before coming back in at 14th C, which I've been doing ...
