St Valentine's Day
A quiz came up at work recently with the question " Which English king decreed that St Valentine's Day would be celebrated on Feb 14th" Was it Henry VIII, or, as some colleagues suggest, an earlier monarch. I would appreciate someone being able to provide evidence on way or another on this before ci...

Need to buy a wooden mallet
Hi,
Our wooden tent mallet gave up the ghost at the end of last season and we need to replace it. Can anyone recommend a UK based supplier.
Many thanks

Hi
A friend has asked if she can add contrasting cuffs and a guard on a mi-parti gown. My gut feeling is no but thought I'd better ask here for some expert advice!
Kind regards and many thanks in advance

Attaching fur trim on gown
Hello everyone, I have almost finished stitching a mid 15c gown for Mr nest and would like to add a fur trim. I have the fur, from a very old coat. My questions are about attaching the fur, should I sew it directly to the wool of the gown or should I attach it to a backing strip of linen first befor...

Re: Lining a dagged hood
Hi Frances
Date line is around 1350 to 1360, not high status but not dirt poor either.
When Mr nest was looking online at hoods from sellers of historical costume, they often seemed to be lined, hence my assumption that all hoods were lined.
Less work for me if unlined then!
Many thanks

Hi Frances,
the fabric is closely woven wool with an almost felted finish so won't fray. Would a wool hood never be lined then?
Thanks

Lining a dagged hood
Hi,
Mr nest would like me to make him a dagged hood. He doesn't want it too flamboyantly dagged but nevertheless, I am not certain how to line it. Should the whole thing be lined (how?) or should the lining stop before the dagged edge?
Any advice would be much appreciated

Medieval tongs??
Hi
Is there any evidence for the use of cooking tongs in 14/15c?? I've had a quick poke around but have not yet found any images for tongs and am keen to save myself from scorched knuckles this year.
Kind regards

Suggestions for Medieval food
Hi, we are having a "Food Day" at work where everyone brings a dish and the theme for this month is English food. I thought that I might do something 14/15th Century. I need to provide something savory that is easily transported and doesn't need "finishing off" at table. Some has already doing a sav...

Re: early to mid 14c Men's clothes
Why would you want short sleves in a world without central heating? Best to assume that sleeves are long and rolled-up, or even strip off layers if you need to cool down. Colin Dunno Colin, this individual wanders around in a T shirt and shorts in all weathers! I'll tell him to roll his sleeves up ...
