Lets hope the logistics work better than the Dover Siege 1215 weekend has - reenactors arriving after an eight hour drive to find there was no space for them so they had to turn around and drive home.

Late/non-payments
Quick question, UK centric, would appreciate a pointer from peoples experience. I sold two helmets and a sword to a trader/reenactor last May and the main cheque I was given bounced. Despite numerous requests for payment or the return of the goods I have just had a succession of broken 'cheques in t...

Anyone recommend an insurance company for a re-enactment groups kit van? You know the kind of thing, low annual mileage, used a dozen times or so etc. Seems to confuse most, even brokers! Thanks. I have used http://www.autonetinsurance.co.uk/ for the past couple of years. No matter how little or in...

it seems hard to find kettle-hats that are good replicas of the 13c manuscripts (same goes with great helms too). So without commissioning something specifically for it, . You need to go to the French / German or Polish armourers - the period had a stronger following there and so more of tem make a...

Smaller ones are decorative, there is also examples of decorative metal strips radiating out from them, these can be found on round top and the later flat top kites - usually linked to someone of note. There are examples of ones with small domes and wider flanges that possibly offered broader protec...

Re: spring steel
Just a quickie.
I'd be interested on a strip of spring steel 8mm for a 400mm at the centre and tapering down to 4mm thick at the ends - 1200mm over all.
Center width about 50mm for the centre 400mm then tapering down to 20mm at the tips.
Tempered.
Yes its for a cross bow of sorts.

Re: 12-14 centry western Drill.
I saw some information years back that related to the late 1170/1190 of Italian infantry drilling in close order and following basic unit commands. Also its known that the knights practiced in their conroi units at riding in close formation and delivering a charge as a solid unit.

Re: Advice on making an Early CoP/Armoured Surcoat
The early reinforced surcoats were nothing like the cop's most are relating to.
Basically make a two layer surcoat out of thick linen and sew pockets into it to contain the metal plates (there is no overlap) straps on the sides to close it to the body and the proper surcoat over the top.

Well....I haven't found anything concrete, but looking through the information I have found it appears that rather than trading like for like (ie herbs/spices) the Europeans traded in Gold,Silver, wool and even Saffron for the spices. I've decided to cover the route from Indian, through persia and A...

Re: Re-shafting an axe.
If the head is lose then tamp the shaft on the ground and see if the head will sit firmly at the end of the shaft. If it is still loose then then wood has dried and shrunk and you#ll need to use a drawknife or spoke shave to reshape the haft. Do not remove too much as the end of the shaft needs to b...

I've just made a pair using sally's idea. It cost less than £20 and a few hours of my time. The dificult bit was turning them the right way out. After making them put them in a bucket of hot water for an hour and use a broom handle inside the shoe to push the seams out. Stuff with paper and leave t...
