Nine Men's Quadrill

A fun dance and good ice-breaker too. You need 4 couples and a spare man.

The four couples form a square (alternating man/woman) and the spare man goes in the middle.

Nine Men's Quadrill

The couples with their back to the musicians and facing the musicians are called the "head", the other 2 couples with their sides to the musicians are called the "sides"

The head couples, join arms and gallop for 8 steps straight across the middle, past the spare man and each other. Then turn and gallop back for 8 steps.

The side couples do the same.

The head couples join hands in a ring, dance 8 to the left, then 8 to the right.
The side couples join hands in a ring, dance 8 to the left, then 8 to the right.

Then, the spare man chooses any of the girls and spins her around for 8 steps. Meanwhile her fellow goes and stands in the middle.

The spare man, then lets go of the first girl, moves around to the left and repeats this for another 8 steps, fellow goes to the middle.

Repeat this until the music stops, at which point all the men must grab a maid! You can stick with the maid you've got or make a mad dash.

Whichever fellow fails to catch a maid becomes the spare man for the middle again.

By the way, for the musicians, it can help to have a loud nice or whistle when the music stops so people can hear it.

Sorry, don't have one yet
