In Wilderness - Anon, c1500
In wilderness there found I Bess, secret alone
In great distress, remediless making her moan
Alas, she said, I was a maid, as others be
Then at-a-braid, I was afraid right piteously
A wanton child spake wordes mild to me alone
And me beguiled, gotten with child and now is gone
Now may I wind, without a friend, myself alone
In far country, men ween I be a maid again
These young men say in sport and play, Go watch a bird
Men telleth in town, when clothes be down, the smock is hid
I cannot keep but sure I weep and all for one
So from my heart shall he not start thof he be gone
Alas that he has thus left me myself alone
In wilderness remediless making my moan
