The Display Team The Club History  Question & Answer Technical Advice Home Links

The Purbrook Bowmen are a group of archers dedicated to accurately showing archery of the past, as opposed to the Hollywood myths. The tool of our trade is the English Long Bow, used effectively in battle for hundreds of years. The English Long Bowmen were renowned for their collective power and ability and are widely regarded as the decisive factor in battles such as Poitiers, Crécy and most famously Agincourt. We carry out these displays not only for our own enjoyment but also to demonstrate what we consider an important part of our Nations heritage.

Our displays are carried out in full historic dress and show the power of one of history's most effective weapons.

We demonstrate various aspects of archery including;

                     • History of the Long Bow and Recurve bow.

                    • Basic Shooting style

                    • Effects of Broadheaded Arrows

• Penetration of Bodkin points

• Shooting against the clock

• The Use Of The Cross Bow

We can work our displays to suit your event, including for instance a living history camp, modern archery, trick shooting and of course a have a go.

We have close links with The Mary Rose Trust, and Southsea Castle.

All members of our group are practising archers with more than fifty years experience between us and as many medals, including Golds at both County and National level. We also have five qualified instructors (3 GNAS leaders and 2 GNAS coaches)

We have appeared on regional television and local radio and also have members experienced in film work.

We are affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS), Which provides public liability insurance with a limit of indemnity of £2,500,000(details upon request).
