The Somerset Engineers

We are a newish group having completed our first full season in 1999. We are members of both the fed and Livery and Maintenance. We enjoy a good bash with the next unit and pride ourselves on our high quality archers and bill block but our real focus is living history. We try our best to demonstrate quality crafts of the period, domestic skills etc and have a wide array of kit for this purpose. We are very much a family oriented group and are unusual in having an almost equal number of male and female members. Last year we enjoyed events at Warwick Castle, Kenilworth, Helmsley, Tewkesbury, Lincoln, Barnet, Cosmeston and of course Kirby Hall. Next year - well it will be an action packed one for sure with hopefully a foreign trip.

Enjoying bringing the past to life.

We have a great time bringing the past to life, creating replica kit and then using it. We are a friendly group and are always keen to welcome new members. Our core group were all traders and hence experienced re-enactors looking for a relaxed outfit for when we weren't trying to make money. Since then we have had many join us, re-enactors with many years experience and total beginners. Minimum standards are strict but we try to loan kit to beginners. All we really ask is that you join us with an open mind, an enthusiasm for the period and the desire to have a good time.

Why engineers?

As an engineer unit we get the best of all worlds. When we want we can dress down as filthy sappers, demonstrate siege techniques etc and get dirty. We get to include craftspeople within our camp with some validity. At the same time engineers are professional soldiers demanding respect within a WOR army. We can have extensive camps and attached troops and still be accurate historically. There were no other sapper units around when we formed, we figured if anyone was going to stage a siege, we'd get invited, seems to be true...
